11 people sentenced to life in murder case in Chittagong

A court has sentenced 11 people to life imprisonment in a case of killing a man named Monirul Alam in Chittagong’s Sandwip upazila.

Judge AKM Mozammel Haque of the Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal passed the order on Thursday afternoon.

The convicts are Maksudur Rahman Prakash Shahin Chairman, Jamal, Abdur Rahman Prakash Rahman Huzur, Ahsan Ullah, Altaf Hossain, Mehraj, Mannan, Farooq, Fuli Mia, Ashraf and Abdur Rahman. The accused was present in the court when the verdict was announced. The other two are fugitives. They are Abdur Rahman and Ashraf. Punishment warrants have been issued against them along with arrest warrants.

Confirming the verdict of the Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, Ayub Khan, the state’s lawyer, said the court sentenced 11 people to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 10,000 and sentenced them to one more year of imprisonment for non-payment.

On July 31, 2015, the accused hacked Monirul Islam to death in Jalepara of Sholashahar in Magadhara Union.

The next day, the victim’s brother Rabiul Alam Sameer filed a murder case with the Sandwip police station.

The case came before the speedy trial tribunal in 2016. After a long testimony, the court announced the verdict today.
