Two people, including Delwar, were sentenced to life imprisonment in that sensational case in Noakhali

A court has sentenced Delwar Hossain Delu and his accomplice Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam to life imprisonment in a case of attempted torture and rape of a naked woman in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila.

Judge Joynal Abedin Roy of Noakhali Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-1 announced the verdict at 11am on Monday (October 4). Prosecutor Mamunur Rashid Lavlu confirmed the matter.

He said the court framed charges against two accused Delwar Hossain Delu and his accomplice Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam in the case on February 16 this year. In just 13 working days, the testimony of 15 people including 12 plaintiffs and three defendants was completed.

Mostafizur Rahman, the investigating officer in the case, said that in September 2020, the local Delwar forces tied the husband to a tree and tried to rape his wife in Jayakrishnapur village of Eklashpur union in Begumganj. Failing that, the housewife was stripped naked and tortured. The accused recorded the scene on their mobile phones. The injured woman recovered after treatment and fled to her sister’s house in the district town. While there, the accused demanded Rs 50,000 from him, otherwise he offered to have sexual relations with them. The previously recorded video was released on social media as the housewife did not agree to it.

On October 4, the video spread through social media. Police rescued the woman who was fleeing after the incident. The victim filed three cases under the Rape, Torture and Pornography Act at Begumganj Model Police Station. At that time there was a wave of protests all over the country.
