OC Pradeep's bail denied in corruption case

Teknaf police chief OC Pradeep Kumar Das’s bail plea has been rejected in a corruption case. Following the hearing on Thursday, Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge and Metropolitan Special Tribunal Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman passed the order.

Defendant’s lawyer Ratan Chakraborty said, “We applied for bail.” Following the hearing, the court rejected his bail application.

In the case of the ACC on the charge of illegal acquisition, on July 27 in the court of Chittagong Senior Special Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, the Assistant Director of the ACC Integrated District Office Chittagong-2 Md. Riaz Uddin filed the chargesheet. After a month of hearing, the court accepted the charge sheet. Then on September 1, he issued an arrest warrant against his wife Chumki Karan.

According to the chargesheet, Pradeep’s wife Chumki owns a six-storey house in Patharghata, a house in Sholashahar, 45 ounces of gold, a car and a microbus, a bank account and a flat in Cox’s Bazar. Against his immovable and movable assets of Tk 4 crore 60 lakh 64 thousand 751, legal and acceptable income is Tk 2 crore 44 lakh 8 thousand 234. The ACC has found the truth of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 2 crore 35 lakh 96 thousand 417. Apart from this, Chumki claimed to be a fish trader but no existence was found for him. A total of 29 people have been named as witnesses in the case.

Pradeep Kumar Das is the son of late Harendra Lal Das of Uttar Sarowatli village in Sarowatli union of Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong. He is currently in jail after being arrested in connection with the murder of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed.
