BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said the Law Minister’s legal opinion on the prayer seeking the party’s Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s treatment abroad was ‘distorted and what prime minister dictated him to tell.”

He made the remarks while speaking at a rallly organised by Dhaka City North and South BNP at Jatiya Press Club premises in the capital on Thursday.

Khaleda Zia was jailed for a total of 17 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and Zia Charitable Trust corruption case in 2018 involving Tk 3.37 crore.

She was shifted to the BSMMU for medical treatment in April 2019. On March 25, 2020, she was released for six months on humanitarian grounds with the conditions that she would stay at her home in Gulshan, Dhaka. Then she returned to her house ‘Firoza’ in Gulshan.

Since then the term of her release has so far been extended four times.

Khaleda has been suffering from chronic kidney conditions, decompensated liver diseases, unstable haemoglobin, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and other age-related complications. On November 28, the medical board formed for her treatment announced that she had been suffering from liver cirrhosis. Plea for allowing to fly abroad for medical care has been denied by the court. Khaleda underwent treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka during April 27–June 19, 2021, October 12– November 3, 2021 and again since 14 November 2021.

Rizvi said Awami League often makes tall talks about development. They frequently mention about different projects including metro rail. “They have looted hundreds of crores of taka from these projects. Economic experts said Tk 11 lakh crore have been shiphoned off from Bangladesh. Awami League leaders are involved in money laundering, while they smuggled the day’s votes at night on December 30 under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” he said.

The BNP leader said the United States has imposed ban on some former officials of Bangladesh from visiting that country. “The PM herself also shouts over it, hurls abusive language against them. The PM, you hurl abusive languages to other countries. Doesn’t forced disappearance take place in your country? If not, where is Ilyas Ali? You’ll find blood and blood on the roads of your country. And, you make tall talks.”

Presided over by Dhaka City South BNP member secretary Rafiqul Alam Majnu, the rally was also addressed by BNP organising secretary Shyama Obaid, Jubo Dal president Saiful Alam Nirob, senior vice-president Mortajul Islam Badru, Dhaka City South BNP member secretary Aminul Huq, Sweccha Sebak Dal president Mostafizur Rahman, general secretary Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel and JCD president Fazlur Rahman Khokon, among others.
